Smart and robust solutions to expand sensor production

High temperature changes

The rising demand for high-temperature sensors (sensors that measure temperatures between -40°C and 950°C) is happening. These sensors are mainly used in the automotive industry. An industry that typically requires fast, smart and robust solutions.

As our customer has fully-automatic production lines already, their challenge requires a different approach. The customer asked IMS to expand its current facilities with an easy to maintain and robust production line. Based on the existing production line, we were looking at different solutions.

Custom solutions for a complex challenge

The project starts with a feasibility study. The idea is to simplify and expand the manufacturing process. The existing production equipment is highly specific, fully automated and combines every process in a very complex way. An improvement in robustness is a necessary step for some of these processes. This makes the whole production line future-proof and sustainable.

The completely automated production process was unraveled in a number of subprocesses. To improve the bigger picture, some subprocesses would be performed semi-automatically. These processes are:

• Cutting;
• Manual pre-assembly;
• Welding;
• Crimp and roll;
• Bending;
• Function test;
• Laser marking.

The answer to our customer’s challenge was an easy to maintain, semi-automated production line. The line consists of semi-automatic production equipment on a uniform basis with a uniform User Interface (UI). This unfolds into processes being executed in a reliable and robust manner. We proceeded to build, validate and install the production line on-site.

Multiple production benefits

At the end of the project, the machine got shipped overseas. After a successful Site Acceptance Test (SAT) our customer gained multiple benefits. The production line provided:

• Simplified production with a robust process;
• Low-maintenance production line;
• A basis for further expansion and re-use.
