Vacancy

As a R&D Project Manager at IMS, you are responsible for leading R&D development projects and the success of these projects. You will lead the internal R&D project team and make sure that by taking the right decisions, the project deliverables will be delivered on time, with the right quality and within budget.

Moreover, you regularly brainstorm with the System Architect about the first designs, which are often in the form of a system or a machine. So you not only coordinate and manage, but also advise and collaborate on the content. A project starts with an extensive introduction and kick-off, after which the client's requirements are clear. You work these out and communicate them to your team members accordingly. From then onwards, you remain closely involved by continually fine-tuning matters.

Especially in R&D projects, proper communication is essential because it is often necessary to adjust goals. While doing this, you also keep commercial project objectives in mind and know how to find the balance between a good result and the investments previously made to achieve this result.

You will work in the R&D team consisting of various Engineers, for example in the field of Mechanics, System & Control and Applied Mathematics. It differs per R&D project what your team exactly looks like, how much budget and time you get from your supervisor and the client, and what the (internal or external) project deadline is.

Acquisition in response to this vacancy is not appreciated. We do not derive rights or obligations from profiles and cv's that are sent unsolicited. Therefore, we regard them as not being sent.

If you enjoy communicating with all kinds of colleagues and parties, conveying your story with determination, and find it challenging to be decisive when an R&D project is slow, then this is a job for you.

Working week

R&D Project Manager

During an interesting working day, you have meetings with the Business Developers, the Managing Director and some Mechanical Engineers. You are also working on the preparations for the kick-off of a project, which gives a lot of energy.

During a less enjoyable day, a client asks if the project deadline can be postponed for a week. As a result, you have to rearrange the planning and make a lot of arrangements to meet this deadline.

Firsthand experience

You have a progress meeting about a project, but you notice not everything is clear to the client yet. How do you proceed?

Prior to the project kick-off, you had an extensive whiteboard session with the client and your project team members regarding the action plan. It was clear what the client needed, which enabled you to make a proper allocation of the tasks.

Then, in addition to coordinating and directing, you could focus on matters such as the budget and the planning. After the first deliverables have been shared with the client, you notice the client had something else in mind. It is then a matter of re-opening the discussion, preferably together with the System Architect.

Various changes need to be made to the designs, and you also want to ensure that incorrect or unrealistic expectations are avoided in the future.

Growth

The growth path within IMS is not fixed. You will be given the opportunity and room for personal and professional growth, for example by following training courses. IMS makes a budget and set time available for this. In addition, initiative and entrepreneurship are highly valued within IMS.

Daniël (32) - Mechanical Engineering

Why did you decide to work for this company?
At IMS you work for a lot of types of clients, although you also go into depth. That attracted me more than going for one niche in mechanical engineering. Moreover, we develop our machines ourselves from start to finish. It is also very nice to see that something, which you have thought up and calculated yourself, really works.

What did you study?
Master Mechanical Engineering at University of Twente.
